Tales from the Court and other stories is the first book by Matthew Thomas and the second in the Silverfish Books' Malaysian Literature in English.
As Mohamed M Keshavjee writes in his afterword: ... the author ... is a keen student of human foibles ... His
characters come vividly to life... the very essence of their
being and their cultures as they play their little games in life... (Free

WRITING: The Amazon juggernaut (16 August
2008)
A recent story in
iStockAnalyst, Amazon.com to Acquire AbeBooks, sent a chill down my
spine. Jeff Bezos wants nothing less than world domination. So, why am
I surprised? Looks like everyone wants to dominate the world these
days: Microsoft, Google, Apple, Dewan Bandaraya …
According to the report, Amazon.com, Inc. has announced that, subject
to closing conditions, it has reached an agreement to acquire AbeBooks.
Those who are familiar with it, AbeBooks is an online marketplace with
(reportedly) over 110 million titles, primarily, used, rare and
out-of-print books that are listed by thousands of independent
booksellers from around the world or, in other words, the only credible
online competition for Amazon.com. One will be able to find pretty much
any book that has been printed on Abebooks, and buy it if one is
willing to pay the price. From our survey, the prices are very
reasonable. But the main cost, due to our geographical location, will
be the postage. (I still haven’t decided if I want to spend
USD25.00 -- not including postage -- for a mass-market paperback
edition of John Allegro's The Sacred Mushroom and the Cross.)
I understand that the operative word in business today is no longer
monopoly. It is hegemony -- the little guys can set up all the
bookshops they want, but we are going to take a cut from it all ...
mwahahahaha.

NEWS: Never too old (16 August
2008)
Martin Wainwright of The Guardian has a report of a 93-year-old debut novelist, Lorna Page. The book, A Dangerous Weakness,
is described as 'a raunchy novel' and ‘a feminist thriller set in
the Alps’ with a heroine who transforms 'the lives of a
93-year-old author and three of her friends who were living in nursing
homes'.
The report says, Lorna Page 'wrote A Dangerous Weakness
three years ago, but put it in a suitcase and made no attempt to find a
publisher'. That was until her daughter-in-law told her that it was a
fantastic book and that it was bound to sell.

NEWS: Oddest book title prize (16 August
2008)
We
have just had a rather limp Booker of Bookers public vote. Now, get
ready for the Diagram of Diagrams. This is from the Bookseller.com
website: 'In celebration of the 30th anniversary of The Diagram Prize
for Oddest Title of the Year, The Bookseller has launched The Diagram
of Diagrams - a public vote to discover the oddest book title of the
last 30 years.’ The online vote can be located at the Bookseller
website. The winner will be announced on Friday, 5th September.'
Diagram Group founder Bruce Robertson came up with the idea for the
Diagram Prize in 1978 as a way to pass the time at a dreary Frankfurt
Book Fair. The inaugural prize was won that year by: Proceedings of the Second International Workshop on Nude Mice.

NEWS: I am a junkie (16 August

I
creep into my study to be alone. And, I take a whiff. The pungent smell
hits the right spot in my brain. The high! The smell of the glue, the
leather, the paper, the ink ... the trip, the magical mystery tour, its
Lucy in the sky with diamonds ...
I haven't even opened the book yet.
Henrietta Rose-Innes writes 'on the dark side of books' in The Sunday Times of South African: "Reading is, of course, a good and precious thing ... But literacy has a dark side too, doesn't it?"

New Books: Political and Literary Tsunami (16 August

RESET: Rethinking The Malaysian Political Paradigm by Suflan Shamsuddin (RM 35.00)
Many would blame Malaysia's current political upheaval on decades of
ineptitude, abuse, and race-based politics. Although the electoral
"tsunami" suggests a rejection of past methods, an alignment on the way
forward remains in doubt.

for
Silverfish Writing Programme members to put up their stories for
constructive criticism. But the internet being what it is, it has
attracted participants from all over (including overseas). We will,
however, for the moment confine the stories to those by Malaysians and
about Malaysians.

About us
Silverfish Books was
established in
1999 as an independant bookshop with a focus on literature, philosophy,
religion and Malaysiana - areas which are either neglected or not
addressed intelligently in the main stream bookstores. Silverfish Books
was established as a bookstore for people who like to read by people
who read. Customers and browsers come to Silverfish Books not only for
the individually selected titles (in a book boutique environment) but
also advice on reading. (Visiting mega bookstores can be intimidating
for the average reader with thousands of books but with nobody to help.
Customers normally end up buying something familiar and their reading -
and their outlook - never grows.) We stock many titles that cannot be
found in any of the mega stores - in fact, not even on Amazon.com! We
avoid 'management' and 'self-help' books (unless they are exceptionally
well written) because we think they are the 'Coca-Cola' of the book
world - useless but addictive. We believe in literature and philosophy,
not instant fixes.
Since 2000 Silverfish Books has also become Malaysia's leading
publisher of Postcolonial and World Literature. The first book,
published in the year 2000, was Silverfish New Writing 1 - an anthology
of short stories from Malaysia, Singapore and beyond. Since then the
Silverfish New Writing series has taken on a life of its own,
attracting postcolonial writers from all over the world.
Silverfish Books is a small press, and we are very proud of that. Every
single book is read thoroughly from cover to cover, and must pass our
stringent criteria before it is accepted. And every book is produced to
the highest standards (albeit in paperback form, due to cost) using
wood free paper.
