Herbs or ulam are an integral part of a Malaysian diet where the medicinal or curative properties of plants are used for simple ailments such as treating coughs and providing nourishment for women after childbirth. There is an abundance of fruits and vegetables - among the most popular are the juicy pomelo from Tambun, bean sprouts from Buntong, groundnuts from Menglembu as well as stink beans or petai that are mostly gathered from the forests.
Authentic Perak dishes such as Rendang Tok, Masak Lemak Tempoyak, spicy Kebebe and fish cooked in bamboo called Kak Pen'Oh are features here with accompanying recipes.
The rich and flavourable Ipoh White Coffee originated from Perak while Gaharu Tea, a new type of tea produced just outside Gopeng, is also becoming very popular for its health benefits. Some of the more popular desserts are the famous Heong Peah, fluffy steamed kaya pau and the wide variety of Tong Sui.
It is indeed a privilege to present this collection of photographs and recipes in an attempt to make known the State's diverse cuisine, some of which are unique only to this region.
